The members of OASIS visited Horticultural College And Research Institute of TNAU at Periyakulam in Sept 2010. We had interaction with the DEAN, STAFF and STUDENTS...The pictures were taken by my NINTENDO gadget...Sorry for the poor quality pictures...The discussion went around organic farming and its possibility to propagate in India.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS

Family and friends are important for any individual who live in a society.
Everyone is a son or daughter of a couple consisting of a man and woman brought together by marriage.
All these relationships fall within a family.
The genes from one generation are passed on to the next generation to keep intact some of the major characters which determine the phenotype.
Genetics plays an important role in a family.
The DNA finger print can tell us about our identity in a family.
The techniques are well advanced nowadays.
Biology of a family tells us that we belong to a particular genetic stock.
Characters and even diseases are inherited from the parents and grand-parents; thus genetic characters decide the life and life style of the progenies in a family.
Over time, if we look at the family tree, we find some are very near relatives whereas many are distant relatives.
Most of the distant relatives are forgotten over time keeping the close relatives in touch.
Friends are people belonging to another family who are associated either in schools as class-mates, or colleagues in working places or persons introduced by some family members or others.
Some say that friends are better than the family members.
In every family there are ups and downs because of the earning capacities.
Among brothers or sisters, some may be rich and some may be poor or some may be highly educated and some may not be.
Thus the disparity among the individuals in a family, in fact, brings in many problems.
In any difficult times family members are supposed to help each other financially and emotionally.
Even good and close friends do that.
Most of the families lived together in a large house keeping the senior person as the head of the family.
The members are supposed to respect the head, who generally moderate the problems of the family.
Such joint family system is slowly vanishing in India because of various reasons such as work at far of places and also to live away independently to gain more freedom to lead a family.
The desire has been induced by independence of thought and free from interference from other family members.
Many families are broken into small pieces and lead independent life.
Such independent families invariably depend on their friends who live nearby.
Thus in today’s modern life, we find friends are more helpful both in joy and sadness.
Mutual help is rendered between friends whenever needed.
In this vast world, some of our friends only can make a unit or group to enjoy life together whereas we can not make friends with everyone.
Like-mindedness is one of the important characteristics needed for making someone as a friend who can keep the family secrets.
Family, at the initial stage will be intact, but over time when it expands through marriage and child birth it start dividing and brings in more divisions and controversies.
“Blood relationship” – some say then they refer to a family whereas such relationship does not exist with friends.
Even friends can become enemies due to misunderstandings.
Therefore, one has to be cautious with anyone whether friends or members of the family.
In order to have a good relation with everyone, one has to apply his mind and also one has to understand the attitude of others.
Family and friends are very much needed to make our life happy and healthy.

TRAIN TRAVEL

B1 - that was the 3 tier AC compartment of Train No. 6609 I travelled from Nagercoil to Coimbatore on 19 Oct. 2010. Thousands of small mini cockroaches flying and crawling all over the compartment was a common sight for all passengers including my 3-yr old grand son who started playing with them. Is there not a way to kill or drive away these unwanted passengers in a train compartment?
Moreover the toilet door did not close from outside! Fortunately it could be bolted from inside. All those who reead this might have noticed such unpleasant things in Indian Railways which earns huge profits every years. Profit at what cost?

COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010 - A COLORFUL CLOSING CEREMONY

It was 14 October 2010 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium; New Delhi, India celebrated one of its success stories of Commonwealth Games – 2010.
At the Stadium was filled with more than 60,000 spectators from different rank and file in order to witness and enjoy the great finale of the Commonwealth Games with great interest and satisfaction.
I was not at New Delhi to see this great event; but I was at Coimbatore in my home sitting in front of my 32 inch LCD TV looking at the colorful ceremony in live.
The two-week sports competitions among 71 commonwealth countries went on peacefully without trouble.
The sports men and women were young and strong physically and mentally.
They enjoyed their participation in various events and celebrated their success winning either gold or silver or bronze medal.
It was a great joy for all Indians because India got 101 medals which included 38 golds.
On the medals tally as far as gold medals are concerned, India came in the second place after Australia which clinched 74 golds whereas England got 37 gold medals one less than that of India.
It gave the credibility of Indian sports persons in spite of the poor treatment they receive in their training facilities.
The formidable victory of Saina Nehwal in badminton yielding a gold medal for India was highly appreciated by one and all.
Unfortunately Sania Mirza could not come to the top in spite of her hard efforts and ended up with a silver medal.
The progress of young women in Indian sports indicates that India has a great future as it respects
and treats both genders equally.
Freedom to the female sex has revolutionized India as we see today.
The extravaganza in Delhi impressed me and millions of other all over the world who glued to their arm chairs in front of the TV set could give a good entertainment evening.
The Vice-President, Prime Minister, UPA President and almost all politicians connected with the games were present in person throughout the closing ceremony enjoying the events.
They might have enjoyed more than the citizen of the country like us.
Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapaksa was also present in the ceremony to greet the Sri Lankan sports persons who won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
The Commonwealth Games was held in Malaysia once and the second Asian country in which the game successfully conducted is India.
The modern electronic technology was fully exploited for the game.
Suresh Kalmadi, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee was criticized by the media for corruption and inefficiency before the start of the games.
There was an unnecessary uproar against him and the Delhi government which some how gave a bad picture of India.
Added to that the monsoon rain was not kind; flooded Delhi and its surroundings which hampered and delayed the completion work of the stadia and the sports village.
There was talk about the poor condition of the rooms and toilets, leaking roof in the stadium, poor living condition of the migrant labors who came all the way from West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
All these were expected and under the Indian conditions one can not find fault with those who organize such a mammoth event for the first time in India.
Spending money and the administrative restrictions put forth by the account officers are so stringent in India.
Those who know the government administration procedures can appreciate it.
To sail all these hurdles, it is very difficult for anyone including Suresh Kalmadi to carry out and organize the games.
Without understanding all these, sitting in a TV news room or one’s own drawing room finding fault with the administration and projecting simple errors here and there is not a sensible thing to do.
The games ended with a pleasant note and it was successful.
That satisfaction makes us to forget all those silly comments on the simple mistakes committed at various levels.
Suresh Kalmadi, good or bad, could efficiently withstood the critics comments and organized the games successfully.
Above all we forgot the incredible work done by the Home Ministry to safeguard the games protecting Delhi from any untoward incidents of terrorism.
We need to appreciate the efforts of Mr. P. Chidambaram and his ministry for their commendable work outside and inside the stadia and the lodging areas of the sports persons.
I feel that India is heading towards a great leap after committing mistakes and correcting them at appropriate time.
Let us understand that every country has some limitation or other to progress.
One can not expect everything perfect.
Perfection does not exist.
So we should appreciate and applaud what is possible and what is not possible.
The colorful closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games – 2010 was memorable event everyone has to keep in mind.
The next game is going to be in 2014 at Glasgow, Scotland.
Will it going to be better than this one?
Let’s see.

DISINTEGRATING DEMOCRACY

It is very common nowadays that in most of the democracies no clear majority
for a single party is coming through.
Democracy survived well when a single party won with a clear majority.
Day by day democracies lost this luxury of single party majority.
This happened in India, United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany and of late in Kyrgyzstan.
Why such things like this happen?
Is it because of the proliferation of parties or people are divided in their opinions and do not like the mandate of the principal parties?
Or is it because more and more parties like to rule the country and derive the benefits.
Is it because the parties want to become prominent by taking over another party?
I think it is a mad race!
The net result is that a single party that has the largest number, but not sufficient to get a majority has to search for coalition partners with like minded parties or independents.
We have seen in the Australian election, three independents could decide the fate of the government.
In fact, parties sometimes the independents divide the votes of the electorates and become indispensable for a party that wants to form the government.
It is a very big drama going on all over the world.
Parties or the independent candidates are bought often by paying huge sums of money or offering ministerial posts and various other favors.
Demands from these indispensables are to be met if some party wants to establish a government.
However the coalition partners make a common minimum program for the government to implement as long as the government survives.
Coalition governments are formed at the cost of sacrificing some of the mandate of a party.
At every point the common minimum program has to be kept in mind to take a decision.
So the government and its head, the Prime Minister has to tackle very carefully such tricky problems.
The Alliance Partners support the Prime Minister only when they agree for the demands (reasonable or unreasonable) put forth by them.
There are many examples where, if such compromises are not met, the alliance partners withdraw their support to the leading party and thus the government collapses.
We have seen time and again such incidents in many states and nations.
To keep the flocks together is a big task for any ruling leader who can not implement his party’s programs without the consent of his partners.
Such is the state of affairs of a democracy.
Is it the disintegration of democracy?
I think so.
Is there any way to integrate democracy with two or three parties alone?
May be possible!
But who will bell the cat?
Everyone wants to become a leader and start a party with some silly ideas and mandates.
There is no rule to control such mushroom parties.
Caste-based, religion-based, labor-based regional and national parties are plenty in a democracy.
There is no one to control such stupid parties.
The President of the country is the supreme leader to oversee the government’s activities.
In fact the President can bring certain improvements to safeguard the decency of democracy.
But alas!
The President himself/herself is selected and elected by interested parties only.
Then it becomes obligatory for the President to follow the party.
Almost all the Presidents are the puppets in the hands of politicians.
Why?
Most of the Presidents thus elected are once an active politician in a particular party.
So they are biased to a certain extent.
They are unable to use their own discretion.
Ordinance can be brought by the President for improving the existing political system in order to integrate the democracy.
If it not done at the earliest, the governing system in a country like India is going to be affected and we will end up in chaos.
Presidents have to study the existing disintegrating democracy and find ways and means to save democracy.
Otherwise, no one else can save us except the Almighty!

WIND GENERATED ENERGY...THE FUTURE...

POLAR SATELLITE LAUNCHING VEHICLE (PSLV)

Satellite launching has become a routine process for India nowadays.
The PSLV at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh of India has been perfected for launching indigenous satellites of various weights as well as those from other countries.
Indian Space Science has grown up as in many advanced countries.
Vikram Sarabhai and Satish Dhawan are the two great men who put the seed of space science in Indian soil and built the Indian Space Research Organization popularly abbreviate by ISRO.
On 24 September 2009, a year ago, the PSLV placed the satellite – Oceansat-2 as well as six European nano-satellites.
It was a remarkable success for the ISRO.
PSLV has launched a total of 39 spacecrafts.
In order to watch ocean, Oceansat-1 satellite was launched 10 years ago.
The data collected helped to study ocean pollution and sedimentation, in addition to find large shoals of fish in ocean.
The color monitor in Oceansat-2 will allow such work to continue.
In addition, Oceansat-2’s scatterometer, which sends out a radio signal in a narrow beam and detects the echo that comes back, can measure the speed and direction of surface winds over the ocean.
The information can help accurate weather forecasts.
Already the Ocean Color Monitor (OCM) has taken pictures of the Arabian Sea off the coast of Gujarat’s Kutch Region.
It appears that it has beamed good quality pictures of Arabian Sea.
However, the life span of Oceansat-2 is only 5 years.
Very short living satellite indeed!
