WORKPLACE WELLNESS: WORLD HEART DAY - 2010

The World Heart Day is celebrated on 26 September every year.
The Sunday Newspaper THE HINDU (26/9/2010) had Special front page followed by the next page allotted to the heart.
Everyone who read THE HINDU knows very well, how the front page every day morning influences the minds of people.
‘Wake up to the Heart’ in bold letters really impressed me and induced me to read every word printed on these two pages.
‘Your heart beats 100,000 times a day’
‘Some people have bigger heart’
‘Women’s hearts beat faster than men’s’
‘The average heart weighs ten ounces’ – were some of the facts highlighted on the front page.
Also seven easy steps were described in different color boxes.
Every year there is a focus on which World Heart Day is celebrated in order to bring awareness in the minds of millions of people.
Educating people about their heart, an organ that works Non-stop from womb to tomb is a great service some of the hospitals have undertaken.
Many cardiologists convey their views on heart and its maintenance to the public on this World Heart Day.
Hospitals come forward to reduce the fees for heart CT scan, Master Health Checkup and Cath Angiogram during this celebration period.
Life style has tremendous influence on the condition of the heart.
Working people especially the youth who are tied inside the IT Parks are subjected to a stationary and stressed life.
Realizing this, the theme for this year’s celebration is put as ‘workplace wellness.’
Everyday hundreds and thousands of heart surgeries are performed all over the world.
Modern technology in medicine has evolved excellent tools to tackle the heart related problems.
Wellness of human beings, whatever they are and wherever they are is of paramount importance for everyone.
Therefore prevention, diagnosis and treatment should be available to all at a reasonable cost, more particularly for the people of all ages belonging to urban and rural areas.
Immediate accessibility to the hospital, through ambulance and other means is very essential to save lives of many.
The increased advancement in medical science and the expertise available in every hospital help to a significant level of controlling the cardiac problems.
We need to take care of our heart by adopting appropriate measures as indicated by the learned doctors who specialize in heart and its function.
I hope World Heart Day 2010 will again stress the need for looking back at our heart, the wonder organ of our body.

PROVIDING FREE FOOD FOR THE POOR

India is still a poor country according to many analysts although there are rich to very rich people live in this country.
Poverty is prevalent in the Indian soil since Independence, and even today people talk about poverty and classify ‘below poverty line’ and ‘above poverty line’ people.
Why do we have poverty in India?
In spite of various attempts to abolish poverty, it continues to be there with us.
I used to think, whether it is possible to drive away poverty?
Economists of our country talk at length about the poor and poverty.
Politicians too talk about it and claim that they are trying to alleviate poverty by adopting appropriate measures.
But still we live with those poor people who suffer with high degree of poverty.
‘On one side we see food is being wasted; at the same time a section of people are starving without sufficient food’ – many political parties claim.
But, what to do?
The government is buying food grains (wheat and rice) from farmers after each harvest and stocks them in go-downs which are very poorly maintained.
Since the space available to stock large quantity of food grains is limited, they are stored in open areas with adequate polythene sheet covers.
In whichever manner food grains are stored considerable quantity is eaten away by rodents like rats.
Because of the poor storage, moisture due to rain spoils much of the food grains.
Such spoilage has been shown in TV screens for the public view.
We all feel that it is sheer waste of food grains which are needed badly for the poor people of the country.
The Ministry of Food maintains the Food Corporation of India which has a network of go-downs all over the country to store food grains.
The maintenance is inadequate as a result we lose large quantity of our valuable food grains.
Recently the Supreme Court of India ordered that excess food grains may be given free to the poor people who need them badly.
The order stirred a storm in the ruling party and it was in a fix because it has to obey the Supreme Court’s order.
The Prime Minister said that the Supreme Court should not go into the realm of policy formulation which the voice of democracy.
Aptly said!
Why Supreme Court? – Anyone will decide to give away the rotting food grains free to the poor!
But how to do it is the question?
Who should be given and how long it should be given?
Is it sufficient to meet the requirement of the poor?
These are some pertinent nagging questions the government has to think of.
The best compromise would be to distribute food grains at subsidized rates will the Food Corporation of India come forward with modern technology in grain storage.
Much is said often about the rotting food grains.
Now, after the Supreme Court’s order and the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s reply, the issue, I hope will be taken up in a war-footing and provide free or subsidized food for the poor.

THE WAKE OF WITHDRAWAL

At the end of 2011, the American soldiers will be out of Iraq showing a ‘New Dawn’ to the Iraquis as announced by President Barack Obama in a recent address.

The operations in Iraq by the U.S. have caused considerable concern to the people of the U.S.

Why should the U. S. troops continue to stay in the Iraqi soil after waging a war against Saddam Hussain?

Americans captured and killed through the court order the king of Iraq in a manner not liked by people of the world.

Now suicide bombs are being blasted on almost every day on the streets of Iraq killing hundreds of innocent Iraqi inhabitants.

Americans wanted to bring democracy in a country divided based on religious sects like Sunnis and Shiyats.

The most ancient civilization prevailed in Iraq was almost devastated by the war in the name of weapons of mass destruction which were not found ultimately in Iraq!

Regaining the lost glory by Iraq is not that easy now.

How long it will take to rebuild a new nation with a democratic government?

Will it satisfy the dreams of Americans who wanted to reform Iraq?

I don’t think it will happen that soon.

Iraq’s internal problems between the religious sects and the third party migrants like al Qaeda who plays a role to keep the country under Islamic fundamentalism.

However, the oil-rich Iraq has something to do with the international trade and relations.

Even Americans have an eye on the oil wealth of Iraq.

The U.S. has its gigantic embassy with 21 buildings spread across 104 acres is being occupied by civilian advisors to bring political stability and economic growth in Iraq.

It is a fact that political stability in Iraq only can bring development in the fore front.

It appears that the Iraqi constitution drafted by the U.S. advisors is not suitable to stabilize Iraq.

Under the circumstances, how Iraq is going to cope up with the current situation on the wake of the U.S. withdrawal?

Are we going to witness more violence or a stable peaceful Iraq?

SOCIAL ACTIVISTS

In our society, we do find many things go wrong due to changes occurring very frequently.

The Government has many departments to look after these anomalies.

There are civil societies too to pay attention to such anomalies.

The Civil Societies have Social Activists who fight for the rights.

They are the watch dogs of the unlawful, events that happen very often in a democracy.

In fact, social activists are present only in a democratic country like India; whereas it is very difficult for them to raise their voice in a non-democratic country.

Even in a democratic country, nowadays the social activists face difficulties sometimes.

The social activists may be academics, advocates, retired judges, artists, journalists and retired diplomats.

They are knowledgeable persons with considerable experience in their own specializations.

These people can take up issues which are affecting the society and the future of mankind more confidently.

Global warming, tribal issues, child abuse, land use, conservation, environmental degradation etc., are some of the issues the social activists handle.

We do find a number of women social activists who fight for women’s rights.

The social activists may be classified into silent activists and revolutionary activists.

Silent activists try to understand the issues and logically fight for the lawful rights whereas revolutionary activists are sometimes violent and cause damage to public property too.

Activists are necessary for a society to raise the voice collectively against injustice.

Although they fail in many cases, still successful in some.

They become popular if they succeed in some important social issues affecting a large number of people.

In certain cases they are also bought by individuals or organizations to shut their mouth.

However, social activists are being recognized in our society, but they are invariably shadowed by the clever politicians.

Nowadays, the media take the role of social activists.

Since media have the means to reach the mass at no time and thus the voice is heard by all including the people who err.

Therefore, social activists and media are indispensible in a democratic society.
