THE WORLD IN 2010

The year 2010 ended and 2011 dawned with great hope for all of us, the people of the world.
It may be a new awakening for all.
The past year was the end of a decade with desired development and disastrous disappointments.
Many events took place in every country of the globe.
The global scenarios reminded us for a while, and by the time new developments occurred the old ones are wiped out from our mind as the waves of the sea erase the sand castle built on the shore by the kids.
But at the end of each year I used to look back the important events which I consider the most impressive and extraordinary ones.
I attempt here to list out some of those to share with the readers of this article.
To start with some of the spectacular ones, no one will forget the thirty three miners rescued after being trapped deep underground for 69 days in Chile, one of the South American countries.
The President of Chile Billionaire Sebastian Pinera elected in January 2010 did all he could do with the help of world support and saved the lives of the trapped miners after 69 days.
For everyone it is unimaginable and even unbelievable.
Those miners might have undergone untold sufferings underground for more than two months.
Finally, they came out to live in this world like everyone else.
The happiest ones were the kiths and kins of those miners.
I considered it as the most successful attempt humans ever succeed in saving lives of the miners.
The next achievement to boast of is that the UAE opened the World’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to touch the sky.
It was Canada’s National Tower called CN Tower with a height of 1815ft (553m) at Toronto thrilled the world since 1976 as the highest one for a number of years.
But the Burj, in Dubai made it as the second one with its height of 2717ft (828m).
It is unimaginable how could the people make such a high building…all due to the new technology.
Another interesting result in sports arena was that Spain won FIFA World Cup in South Africa after defeating Germany in the final football match.
It was a month long entertainment for all those who were interested in football all over the world.
I too enjoyed the matches which were conducted excellently.
The pro-democracy activist Liu Xiaobo jailed in China was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for 2010.
But the Chinese government was not happy about this award to one of their prisoners.
In the political scene, Julia Gillard became the first female Prime Minister of Australia.
In Brazil, Dilma Rousseff was elected as the first woman President.
Above all, the pro-democracy leader Madam Aung San Suu Kyi was released after 15 years house arrest in Myanmar.
One can not forget the name s of these three women who made a mark in 2010.
Moreover, unpleasant disasters were observed more around the world.
One of the worst disaster happened in the Gulf of Mexico killing eleven workers was the explosion that took place in British Petroleum (BP) Deepwater horizon drilling rig.
It was considered to be the largest oil spills in history.
Finally after many failures and spending billions of dollars, BP could cap the well and stop the spill.
Environmental damage due to exploitation of natural resource from the ocean bed was caused by the human desire to invest in fuel for supplying to the human need.
More so, disasters due to flood in Pakistan, earthquake devastation in Port-au-Prince of Haiti killing 2, 30,000 people – are unforgettable and sorrowful.
In fact, a huge human loss in a very poor country like Haiti was an additional punishment.
Also in Cuba, Ethiopia, Chile and Indonesia earthquakes killed many and injured thousands of people.
Air-crashes also took away large number of lives including the President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, his wife and more than 90 officials.
Every year we come across such calamities in certain countries.
We simply say natural calamities/disasters and move on.
Corruption all over the world including India and Wikileaks revealing the diplomatic secrets are some of the unexpected events occurred in 2010.
Will the World 2011 be devoid of such above mentioned incidents that occurred in 2010?
Or will there be an improvement during 2011?
Who knows?
However let us hope and expect that 2011 be a good year with no natural calamities and unpleasant happenings.
It is all only expectations; but what has to happen will always happen – we have to get prepared to challenge and change our live accordingly.
In fact that is what happens every year.
Remembering the past enter s into history.
Vision of the future with good hope is always better I think.
